BOBBIN

26th December:

Apologies for the delay in updating but I wanted this to be a positive rather than anything else - I know we were all hoping against hope that we / our vets would be able to save one of Bobbin's eyes.

Sadly this was not to be. Both eyes were in a dreadful state, one ulcerated and ruptured, the other not ruptured yet but the eyeball entirely full of blood, retina detached and excruciatingly painful for him and most importantly non functional ever.

So on Monday Bobbin underwent surgery and both eyes were removed.

To say he is doing remarkably is an understatement. His tail has never stopped wagging, his smile is infectious and his appetite phenomenal.

The almost certain reason for the extreme and inexcusable damage ..... BEING CRATED FOR THE MAJORITY OF 9 MONTHS NEXT TO A PLUG IN AIR FRESHENER!!!!!

His sense of smell is very poor at present (we are hoping this will improve with time and stimulus and so far this seems to be the case) - he knows when we are getting his breakfast (but then most know when tripe is on the menu!!!), he is smelling the ground as he finds his way about outdoors and he knows when Chris or I are nearby.

His ears were also in a poor way, filthy dirty and his hearing poor... but again he is starting to recognise sounds - clapping, squeaking and his name in an excited and high pitch! Yes we both sound a little odd but he doesn't think so - although the rest of the pack look at us as if bonkers!

So in short - not what we hoped for but looking forwards now ... This dog is REMARKABLE and we feel incredibly lucky that he found his way here.

Once his buster collar is able to be off and he is a little more familiar with his surroundings you will see more of him I am sure!

THANK YOU as always to you all for your support

22nd December:

Bobbin arrived with us (massive thanks to a lovely rescue friend for sorting the safety of him and arranging to get him to us)...our vets were appalled!

He has some of the worst ulcerated eyes imaginable and tragically his sight is almost certainly lost.

His right eye is ruptured and tomorrow (Monday) he is undergoing surgery (enucleation) to remove it as it is excruciatingly painful and also a risk of further damage due to walking into things as he gets his bearings.

I have been treating his less damaged eye hourly since arrival when he is awake alternating two different special drops to see if we can save it - but I don't think anyone is very hopeful as he appears to have lost all sight already and the ulceration, although better than the other eye, is still pretty awful.

We will post his full story another day but for now - he is safe and a joy and seems to be managing very well.

His hearing has been affected as has his sense of smell so we are working on finding pitches and sounds he responds to and smells also ... however he wags his tail continuously, eats like a horse, interacts with the other dogs, loves to bumble about and although he is penned for his own safety at the moment.

We are fairly confident that he will learn where all is and navigate as Moss has.

We will update both Facebook and this page after the surgery - please all hold him in your thoughts and hope his left eye can be saved and improved on.

18th December:

Just 3 yrs old and taken to be PTS by his owners rather than treat these hideously ulcerated eyes!

He is arriving from the vets who saved him on Friday and will be assessed by our vets and a treatment program put in place. In the meantime I will be looking for local foster to help him whilst his sight is hopefully saved.
